Today (28/07/10), Pat Carey T.D., Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs approved funding of €30,000 to nine community groups to support a public awareness initiative to promote the 17th October 2010 as the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.  Community Groups will use this opportunity to further promote the 2010 EU Year for Combating Poverty and Social Inclusion.

On 17th October, the UN invites all States to devote the day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution.

Speaking to day, Minister Carey said:

October 17th presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, and to promote awareness of the issues involved.  I am delighted to approve funding today to nine community groups who will conduct a range of activities focusing on poverty and social exclusion which will hopefully challenge poverty and marginalisation in a positive way”.
