About Pat Carey
Pat Carey serves as a local TD for the Dublin North West constituency, covering Finglas and Ballymun. He has been active in local and national politics for over 30 years and is currently serving as the Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs in the Irish Government.
He was first elected to Dublin Corporation in 1985 and again in 1991, he was subsequently elected to Dail Eireann in the 1997 General Election for the constituency of Dublin North West.
He was educated in Presentation Brothers, Milltown, Co. Kerry and St Patrick’s Teachers’ Training College, Drumcondra, UCD (B.A.) and Trinity College Dublin (H. Dip. Ed.). Prior to entering politics on a full time basis, he worked as a primary school teacher and Deputy Principal at St. Finian’s School, Finglas.
He has previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs up to November 2004 and as Co-Chair of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body. Following his re-election in 2007 he was appointment as Minister of State with responsibility for the Community Affairs and the National Drugs Strategy.
In 2008, following the election of Brian Cowen as Taoiseach, Pat Carey was appointed Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach and Department of Defence. Following a cabinet reshuffle in March 2010 he was appointed Minister at the newly created Department for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.
